Message from the Chair

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the UMMC Department of Emergency Medicine's "The E.D. Dispatch." Through this and future issues, we hope to build a sense of community among alumni and others who have a shared history in our department. The greatest constant of our department is its ability to produce stellar emergency medicine physicians. Sharing stories of change and success is important to us. Ultimately, we hope you enjoy reading the included success stories as much as we enjoy putting them together.

Residency Program News

Our leadership team – led by Dr. Sarah Sterling (class of 2012) – recently completed interviews for our class of 2025! Once we welcome our residents this summer, we will have a total of 48 residents. Over the past few years, our program has grown in size, we've welcomed new leadership, and our residents began rotations at additional community hospitals.

Pets of Emergency Medicine

Happy Valentine's Day from our Emergency Medicine pets! Studies have shown that having a dog or cat can lower your heart rate, blood pressure, and risk of cardiovascular disease. So, celebrate this day by giving your furry friend a hug. If you have a feathered friend or fish, give them some extra love, too!

2021 Accolades

The Department of Emergency Medicine was selected for the "Esprit De Corps" Award as part of the Pillars Awards sponsored by the UMMC Office of Diversity and Inclusion. This award acknowledges a department that demonstrates successful collaboration on efforts to improve outcomes of diverse communities.

Clinical Update

Like every other clinic, hospital, emergency department, and health care system in the United States, the Emergency Department at UMMC was hard-struck by the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. Our team has continuously adapted to meet the needs of our patients and continues to do so today.

Fellow Focus

The sports medicine fellowship – established in 2007 – is off to another strong start this year. The team began providing sports medicine coverage for Jackson State University, and it has been a great experience. We have two bright and highly motivated fellows this year – Drs. Rudy Napodano and Rob Kidnie.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

In 2016, the Department of Emergency Medicine established its first diversity committee. Over the last six years this group has been working to increase the visibility of diversity and inclusion and create an inclusive environment that is welcoming to students, residents, faculty, staff, and patients.

Alumni Spotlight - Gerad Troutman, MD, MBA, FACEP, FAEMS

Dr. Gerad Troutman graduated from our program in 2011 and has had a busy career as an entrepreneur, political advocate, EMS medical director, and academician. Read more to learn what he has accomplished over the past 10 years.

Women in Emergency Medicine at Work!

The Women in Emergency Medicine (WEM) Group, established in 2017 with the goals of providing mentorship, sponsorship, recruitment, and support of female emergency medicine physicians, is still going strong.

Research Update

The arrival of COVID-19 in Mississippi brought new challenges and opportunities for the EM research team, led by Drs. James Galbraith and Utsav Nandi. Rising to the occasion, the team has enrolled over 600 patients in more than 15 COVID-related trials since March 2020, along with continued enrollment in non-COVID trials.
